Eosinophilic Enteropathy Overview
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an allergic inflammatory disease where eosinophils, a type of white blood cells, are found in elevated levels in the esophagus. When the esophageal lining is inflamed, it can cause children to have discomfort and decreased appetite. They may become cautious or very “picky” around food. Some begin to refuse all but a very limited number of foods. Children with EoE commonly also have other allergic diseases such as asthma, eczema and “runny nose.”

Medical treatment varies. Some children are put on highly specialized formulas. Others are put on very restrictive diets with elimination of some foods such as gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, peanuts or tree nuts, and fish or other seafood. Complete elimination of some of these foods can require a whole new way to read food labels and ingredients. Parents often need support with dietary changes, restrictions and teaching their children to trust food again.
Nourish provides an Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) Parent Support Group facilitated by a dietitian and parent. Once the medical team has made a diagnosis and specific recommendations for a child, the support group can offer nutritional information and parent to parent assistance.
